What is Bitcoin?

Understand the asset behind the price.

Bitcoin is a crypto asset launched in 2009. Unlike lei or euros, it isn’t issued by a central bank. The network is maintained by thousands of computers around the world, which verify transactions and record them in a public ledger called the blockchain.

Where the value comes from

Supply is capped at 21 million units. The price forms freely, through supply and demand, on platforms around the world. That’s why it can move a lot in a single day.

A single bitcoin can be split into 100 million smaller units. You don’t need to buy a whole one.

What this means for you

You can track the price in lei on this page, at the official BNM rate. If you want to understand what volatility feels like without risking real money, the Coin Bank Game simulator is the place for that.

Practise this in the game ↗ Virtual funds. No real money.
